ON THE BOOK:
The subtitle says it perfectly - "the relevance of Jesus without
all the religious crap." This is a fascinating book, very easy and
quick to read, and hard to put down. It feels like you're having a
friendly conversation in a coffee shop... or maybe hiking with a friend
on a trail... talking about THE most important topic there is. It's
approachable and concise, with plenty of humor and refreshing honesty.
If you've ever wondered whether Jesus is really relevant for your life -
if you want to investigate Christianity with an open mind - I encourage
you to give this book a try.

The book is phenomenal. I'm 23 years old and I've grown up in
church. I love Jesus but have never been comfortable or satisfied with
things the way they are. "Oh Shit, It's Jesus!" has really helped to put
words to my thoughts and encouraged me to simplify my life. To let go of
all the stuff that doesn't really matter, and just follow Jesus. He
loves us. And He is good. I am part of a fantastic community of
people. My pastor has your book too. It's been really great
for all of us to get down to the root of what this is all about and live
it. It's good. Thanks for writing and sharing. Grace
and paece to you. Jordan

FROM THE BOOK JACKET: Jesus was a peasant
day-laborer. His teachings and his miraculous deeds were
revolutionary. When religious leaders saw Jesus walking up, out of
frustration they would say "Oh shit! It's Jesus!" Jesus was
trouble. He taught that God was more concerned about social
justice and the loving restoration of individuals, rather than blind
allegiance to an oppressive and irrelevant religious system. When
Jesus would walk along the shore of a fishing village, a life hardened
fisherman would see Jesus and joyfully shout out "Oh shit! It's
Jesus!" After a hard day of labor, fishermen, women from the
fields, and children would sit in the evening sun and listen to Jesus
teach about the love and mercy God desires for everyone. The
reality and message of Jesus' life are amazing. You may see
organized religion and the church as a negative option for your
spiritual life, but I encourage you to look at the actual life of Jesus
as a positive choice for your spirituality.
Reviews About the Book:
Is it ok to deconstruct Jesus? Maybe not, but Hughes definitely
works to deconstruct the telling of Jesus which I think is a worthy
endeavor. In chapters with titles like Street Preachers, Jesus
Freaks, Bible Thumpers, & Other Annoying People; There’s Nothing Holy
about This Book, the Bible and The Church Sucks, Hughes definitely
pushes against the comfortable caution tape of “polite religious
society”…. but then again, so did Jesus… and that’s precisely the point.
Far from an angry, rebellious toddler tantrum however, this book is
beautiful in its simplicity, shocking in its profundity and refreshing
in its perspective. Using challenging imagery, stories, insight
and paraphrased versions of “Jesus stories”, this quick little read
might surprise you with the level of challenge that is offered if you
choose to accept it. By looking at the LIVING of Jesus through a lense
that attempts to remove the ‘religious crap’, I believe we can arrive at
a more complete understanding of Jesus’ atonement (more on that another
day) and this little book is a great resource for that exercise. I
think this would be a great book to read with some “I like Jesus but not
the church” friends and would likely generate some very interesting,
stimulating conversations.
ZoHo Writer Review
I've
read the book...have you?! It took a while to read it because my 18 yr
old daughter kept giving them away. She and her private christian school
peers were excited to pick it apart and also enjoyed it's realism. An
older daughter immediately started reading the book and thought that
that it hit upon the reasons why she has refused to find a church as an
adult. She may give "religion" another try, (though her salvation was
never lost). When a book was left in a hotel room, the front clerk asked
if she could read it during the night shift while no one was looking.
She was afraid to touch it for fear of lightning strikes. I look forward
to using it as a tool to win over a friend who is "anti-religion",
"anti-chrisitianity", and "anti-Jesus and the Bible". He immediately was
interested in the book by looking at the title. Steve Hughes’ primary
audience is clear....not those who already believe and know Jesus. But I
can see where he would like those most quick to judge to read it and see
where they could practice a more loving Christianity with non-believers.
Win them with love, not criticism.
The word "sh.." is such a mild expletive and certainly doesn't
judge the heart just by its use, especially in this case when the use of
the word is to draw people to a loving relationship with Jesus. I've
witnessed it doing so.
